The BBC’s recent Horizon program ‘Body Clock: What Makes Us Tick, gives a fascinating insight into the role that exposure to the rhythm of natural daylight plays in our health & wellbeing. The program features an experiment on subject Aldo Kane, in which he is deprived of daylight in a bunker, with only controlled artificial lighting for 10 days. The results show significant effects on his reaction times, mental performance, physical strength and mood as well as potential longer term health issues resulting from irregular sleep patterns. The extent of his discomfort is at times difficult to watch and presents a strong case for all of us to understand and manage our daily exposure to natural daylight.
